Have you been planning to go to the car wash, but you keep putting it off because rain is in the forecast? Maybe you just let let the rain water do the cleaning, and have always thought that has been good enough? Here’s what we’ve learned based on our own industry expertise.
To Wash or Not to Wash?
First, we must point out that rain will NOT clean your car. It will actually make your car dirtier. Rain water, as it travels through the atmosphere, collects contaminants. By the time it reaches your car and dries, those contaminants remain in the form of water spots on the paint, windows and headlights.
Wax On Wax Off
Since your car needs to be washed, is it best to do so before or after the rain? Ideally, we believe washing before is the best option. The wash needs to be accompanied by a wax to be effective, because it will repel the rain water off the car’s surface.
If you can’t wash your car before the rain, then it’s best to have it washed right after the rain. This will remove the contaminants, or water marks, before they have time to deeply etch into the paint. If these marks have time to bake into the paint, you’ll need professional vehicle detailing to remove them.
